Tools for a complex ocean

We are transforming research-grade oceanographic models into open, reproducible, and auditable decision-support tools—enabling governments, communities, and markets to make high-stakes ocean decisions grounded in transparent, scientifically credible evidence.

THE CHALLENGE

The ocean is vast, dynamic—and sparsely observed

High-stakes decisions about ocean systems ultimately depend on models to fill in what direct measurement cannot resolve.

Research tools, not decision tools

Today's best ocean models are scientifically powerful but complex to configure, computationally intensive, and not designed for routine public decision-making.

Uneven access, unequal governance

Access to modeling tools is deeply skewed. Developing countries often lack the infrastructure to evaluate risks and opportunities in their own waters.

Meeting a critical moment

For ocean-based carbon dioxide removal, standards set today will shape which approaches scale for decades to come.

OUR APPROACH

We build shared scientific infrastructure

01

02

Standard Datasets

Common data standards make results comparable across sites and studies, building the shared evidentiary foundation that carbon markets, regulators, and researchers need. We publish open datasets and interactive tools that map ocean-based carbon dioxide removal efficacy.

03

Open-Source Tools

We are building C-Star, an open-source platform that makes high-fidelity regional ocean modeling accessible without sacrificing scientific rigor. Versioned inputs, automated workflows, and end-to-end provenance tracking mean any result can be independently reproduced and audited.

Global Community

We invest in fellowships, training, and regional partnerships to build a global community capable of running, extending, and scrutinizing these tools in their own waters.
